Long-time San Luis Obispo county residents Tom and Carol Hinkle began their wine adventure years ago. After successful teaching careers, Tom at Cal Poly SLO and Carol at two local high schools, the Hinkles seriously began to investigate the possibility of farming premium wine grapes. Searching for vineyard property, the Hinkles looked at over two hundred parcels of potential vineyard land before discovering the perfect spot in the spring of 1996.

Once owned by a Hollywood movie producer, the beautiful 63 acres nestled among rolling hills and the Huer Huero Creek was destined to become home to this small, family-owned vineyard and winery. The big red barn, now the winery and barrel room building, was originally constructed to accommodate the catering needs and food service for the actors on the set of a 1984 movie.

Happily, the Hinkles have found this small Eastside ranch the perfect setting for their Rio Seco adventures. In the planning stages since the early 1990s, these 30-year San Luis Obispo North County residents are finding their ultimate retirement dream slowly beginning to take shape.

Our philosophy is a testimony to our belief that winemaking starts in the vineyard. Rio Seco planted thirty-one acres in the spring of 1997 to traditional Paso Robles Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, but additionally planted Syrah, Cab Franc, Roussanne, and a test block of Viogner and Merlot...all in all, a winemakers delight!

The Hinkles have realized that there exists unlimited potential for excellence and uniqueness for Rio Seco wines. Implementing a philosophy of natural fermentation, no additives in the wines, and of course, starting with the best fruit possible, give high hopes for making Rio Seco a respected name on the Central Coast for fine wines.

Today, family and friends find Rio Seco the perfect place to picnic, explore in the creekbed, or walk through the 7-year-old vineyard. Enjoying sunsets across the river, music, laughter, shared stories, and fine wine are all the makings for a pleasant afternoon indeed!
