Wine Starts in the Vineyard

Our philosophy is a testimony to our belief that winemaking starts in the vineyard. Rio Seco planted thirty-one acres in the spring of 1997 to traditional Paso Robles Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, but additionally planted Syrah, Cab Franc, Roussanne, and a test block of Viogner and Merlot...all in all, a winemakers delight!

The Hinkles have realized that there exists unlimited potential for excellence and uniqueness for Rio Seco wines. Implementing a philosophy of natural fermentation, no additives in the wines, and of course, starting with the best fruit possible, give high hopes for making Rio Seco a respected name on the Central Coast for fine wines.

Lynn Hayes – Assistant Winemaker

After retiring at age 55 from working 34 years in aerospace systems at Northrop Space Grumman, Lynn Hayes, his wife Janice and their daughter Hayleigh moved to Templeton, CA for relaxation, wine and the SLO life.  While out wine tasting in Paso Robles, Lynn and his wife came across Rio Seco Vineyard & Winery where it just so happened, owner Carol Hinkle years ago was Janice’s high school P.E. teacher.  A connection was instantly made and a new friendship formed.  Lynn, an avid wine enthusiast with no formal training, volunteered to help out with the 2004 crush and has been a valuable asset on the crush pad, absorbing knowledge and learning the Rio Seco ropes ever since.  2009 marked Lynn’s first official crush as Assistant Winemaker, leading the cellar rats in 14-hour days with a smile on his face the entire time.  Rio Seco is fortunate to have such an enthusiastic, willing and capable Assistant Winemaker to help make great wine from vintage to vintage.
